Monza, the bottom team, surprises Fiorentina
Monza shocked high-flying visitors Fiorentina 2-1 to record their second Serie A victory.
Monza ended a five-game losing run with their first victory since October by winning against Fiorentina 2-1. The victory narrowed the distance to second-from-bottom Venezia by one point, but Salvatore Bocchetti's struggling team was still at the bottom of Serie A.
Fiorentina lost a chance to pass Juventus and ended up in sixth place. Two minutes before halftime on Monday, Patrick Ciurria followed up to smash a loose ball into the corner of the net with his left foot, giving Monza the lead. The midfielder scored his first goal of the season after missing a significant portion of it due to injury. Lucas Beltran was unfortunate to see a goal-bound attempt saved off the line nine minutes into the second half after Fiorentina substituted him for Albert Gudmundsson at halftime. With 16 minutes left, Beltran did score from the penalty spot, but it came after Monza's second goal scored by Daniel Maldini.
