Yuki Tsunoda’s Formula 1 career will end this year

Yuki Tsunoda’s Formula 1 career will end this year unless Honda make a “big push” to find him a spot on the 2026 grid, predicts 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.

Tsunoda’s hopes of being promoted to Red Bull’s senior team were dashed when Christian Horner confirmed Liam Lawson as Sergio Perez’s replacement for 2025. Although Tsunoda, who tested the RB20 in Abu Dhabi, appeared in contention, PlanetF1.com reports he was never a genuine candidate.

Despite outscoring Lawson by seven points to four in their six shared races, Red Bull see greater potential in Lawson, given his youth and career stage. Team boss Christian Horner highlighted Lawson’s stronger race pace and resilience, noting: “His qualifying pace was very close to Yuki’s, and with just 11 grands prix under his belt, he’ll only improve.” Facing a fifth season with Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s junior team, Tsunoda’s future in F1 remains uncertain. Jacques Villeneuve speculates that without Honda’s intervention, the 2025 season could be Tsunoda’s last.
