Afridi was able to reclaim the top rank because of his recent performance in Pakistan's successful series against Australia when he took eight wickets in three games at a remarkable average of 12.62. With Afghanistan's Rashid Khan holding onto his second-place rating and South Africa's spinner Keshav Maharaj dropping to third, Afridi's ascent is part of a ranking shuffle.

Pakistan is the only team with the top-ranked player in both ODI bowling and batting thanks to Afridi's domination on the field and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam's top rating in the ODI batting rankings. Babar is the top hitter in the rankings after scoring 80 runs against Australia with just one dismissal.
