After a dismal F1 2024 season, Sergio Perez was fired after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year. His troubles had a big effect on the team's performance, as they dropped to third place in the constructors' championship after having a commanding lead one-fourth of the way through the season.

In the 18 races that followed the Miami Grand Prix, the sixth round of the season, Perez placed no higher than eighth, giving him a season total of only 152 points, or almost one-third of what teammate Max Verstappen earned. It was announced shortly after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that Liam Lawson of New Zealand will replace Perez as the team's driver in Formula One 2025. Perez, “In the next six months, I will make a decision on what I want for the next step in my career, it’s too early to give an answer as to whether I intend to return to Formula 1.”
