Sergio Perez's departure from Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2024 season reportedly cost the team millions to terminate his contract. After a disappointing campaign, Perez lost his seat for 2025, with Liam Lawson promoted from Red Bull's sister team, The Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team.
The Mexican driver finished eighth in the 2024 World Drivers' Championship with 152 points, a staggering 185 behind teammate Max Verstappen, who clinched his fourth consecutive title. Perez's struggles contributed to Red Bull slipping to third in the Constructors' Championship, behind McLaren and Ferrari. Despite signing a two-year extension in June, Perez’s form failed to improve, with no race wins since the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Both parties agreed to end his contract early, paving the way for Lawson’s promotion.
