Real Madrid shares the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Atletico
Thanks to a goal from Kylian Mbappe in the second half, Real Madrid rescues a point.
After Kylian Mbappe equalized, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 in Saturday's Spanish La Liga match. In the first half, Julian Alvarez had given Atletico a contentious penalty. In the La Liga rankings, Real Madrid (50 points) is one point ahead of second-place Atletico (49 points), while Barcelona (45 points) is in third. On Sunday evening, Barcelona will play Sevilla. At the Santiago Bernabeu, the hosts ramped up their game in the second half, leaving Atletico to hold on after a tight first half.
In the box, Aurelien Tchouameni stumbled over Samuel Lino's foot. The incident occurred after the ball had passed both players, and Cesar Soto Grado controversially gave Madrid a penalty following a VAR review. Alvarez converted the penalty, the first one awarded against Madrid in La Liga this season. Later, on the occasion of his first Madrid derby appearance, Mbappe was on hand to score after Bellingham’s attempt to score was blocked.
