Raul Asencio Shines for Real Madrid but Faces Spain Call-Up Snub
Real Madrid’s diminishing Spanish presence in their first-team squad over the past year has been well-documented.
Real Madrid’s diminishing Spanish presence in their first-team squad over the past year has been well-documented. This decline was particularly evident earlier in the season when no Real Madrid players were called up for La Roja’s fixtures. Previously, the likes of Nacho Fernandez and Joselu Mato were regular inclusions, but both departed last summer for new challenges in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, respectively. Additionally, Kepa Arrizabalaga also left, leaving Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez, Fran Garcia, and Dani Ceballos as the only Spaniards in the squad. However, the emergence of Raul Asencio has since bolstered the club’s Spanish contingent.
Since making his debut in November, Asencio has taken full advantage of injuries to key defenders Eder Militao and David Alaba, securing a regular starting spot. His performances, particularly in Real Madrid’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Manchester City, have been impressive.
