Atalanta easily defeated relegation-threatened Empoli 5-0
Atalanta moved to within three points of Serie A leaders Inter after responding to their Champions League elimination with a routine win.
In reaction to Gian Piero Gasperini's criticism, Ademola Lookman scored twice as Atalanta easily defeated relegation-threatened Empoli 5-0, reigniting the Serie A championship battle. A month ago, it appeared like Napoli and Inter would win the Scudetto, but Atalanta has been able to close the gap due to both teams' lacklustre performances. With 12 games left, Atalanta is now three points behind leaders Inter and two behind Napoli after their victory on the road on Sunday.
After Davide Zappacosta's cross from the box's edge bounced off the Empoli striker and rolled into the corner of the net, Emmanuel Gyasi's own goal in the 27th minute set the tone. Mateo Retegui doubled the lead six minutes later before Lookman made it 3-0 in the 43rd minute when he latched onto a through ball, deftly rounded goalkeeper Marco Silvestri and put the ball into the empty net.
