Second-place Marseille beats Saint-Etienne 5-1

Amine Gouiri is turning out to be a wise acquisition for Marseille.

Amine Gouiri, a dynamic forward, helped second-place Marseille defeat Saint-Etienne 5-1 in Ligue 1 on Saturday, scoring two spectacular goals and contributing to the other three. In the three games since signing from Rennes during the January transfer window, Gouiri has also contributed three assists. Although Marseille's victory was stunning, it had little effect at the top as Paris Saint-Germain, who had not lost, managed to scrape a 1-0 victory against Toulouse to keep their 10-point advantage.

Gouiri's excellent solo effort put Marseille ahead. In the 27th minute, he came in from the left and curled a fantastic 20-meter shot into the upper right corner. Then, early in the second half, Mason Greenwood scored his 14th goal of the season after his assist resulted in a defender handballing the ball. Gouiri's curling pass found Amar Dedic, who headed the ball back across goal to allow Rabiot a tap-in for Marseille's fifth goal.
