Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals
Steve Smith has retired from one-day international cricket following Australia's semi-final exit from the Champions Trophy.
Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals after an illustrious career. The 35-year-old played 170 ODIs for Australia, scoring 12 centuries and winning the World Cup in 2015 and 2023. Smith captained the team in Pat Cummins' absence during his final ODI appearance, where Australia suffered a four-wicket loss to India in the Champions Trophy in Dubai.
The former Sussex batsman will continue playing Test and T20 cricket for Australia. Reflecting on his career, Smith said, “There have been so many amazing moments and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight, along with the fantastic teammates who shared the journey.” A two-time Australian men's ODI player of the year (2015, 2021), Smith believes now is the right time to step aside as the team prepares for the 2027 World Cup.
