Shreyas revealed that he wasn't in the original playing XI in Nagpur
Iyer revealed that he was originally not a part of the playing XI in the 1st ODI vs England. Iyer said that he received a late-night phone call from Rohit Sharma
Shreyas Iyer played a brilliant counter-attacking knock in India's thrilling 4-wicket win over England in the first ODI of the three-match series. Coming in at a crucial juncture after India had lost both its openers within the first six overs, Iyer displayed remarkable composure and aggression, scoring a quickfire 59 off just 36 balls. His innings provided the much-needed momentum and stability to India's chase. Interestingly, Iyer was not initially part of the playing XI and only learned late at night that he would be replacing an injured Virat Kohli.
Speaking to the broadcaster after the match, Iyer revealed a lighthearted incident about how he found out about his selection. He was watching a movie on the night before the match, planning to stay up late. However, he received a phone call from skipper Rohit Sharma informing him that Kohli had a swollen knee and would not be playing.
