Shami puts up a lot of effort during India's first practice
The quick was spotted with some protection on his knee but nearly hit full tilt towards the end of his training session
India's first training session in Kolkata focused on Mohammed Shami's bowling in preparation for their T20I series against England, which begins on January 22.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel closely monitored Shami's progress as he bowled for more than an hour with his knee taped. Shami hasn't played international cricket since the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Despite being fully healed from his ankle surgery, Shami's knee swelling prevented him from being considered for either of the Border-Gavaskar Test series. Shami warmed up on Sunday by bowling for around 20 minutes with a half run-up after identifying a place on a good-length section of the practice grounds. Later, he bowled to openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson in the nets with his complete run-up. He worked on both short- and long-range catching with head coach Gautam Gambhir and fielding coach T Dilip in between.
