Liverpool defeated 2-0 Manchester City
It was supposed to be a tight Premier League clash between two title contenders, but it turned out to be a comprehensive victory for Liverpool over Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
With goals from Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah, Liverpool defeated their championship rivals 2-0, moving them 11 points clear of defending Premier League winners Manchester City. After defeating Real Madrid in the middle of the week, Arne Slot's team knew going into the match that a victory would give them a significant lead in the battle for the championship.
The Reds got off to a fast start, charging forward in force, and the only thing stopping Virgil van Dijk was the woodwork. However, Gakpo completed Salah's enticing pass in the 12th minute, giving Liverpool the lead. Liverpool continued to control the first half, and Van Dijk was a towering presence at both ends, sending a powerful header just past. Rico Lewis's attempt went off-target after 39 minutes, City's sole attempt of the first half. In the second half, as City built confidence but were unable to get any shots on target, Salah blasted a one-on-one effort over.
